For Lent, Zion Hopes To
Forgive $1,000,000 of Medical Debt
As the church, we are called to honor our common vulnerability with our neighbors, and to do what we can to realize God’s dream of solidarity and redemption for all—beginning with those hurting the most.
This Lent we are raising $10,000 to forgive the medical debt that weighs heaviest on our neighbors.
Working with RIP Medical Debt, we can buy their unpaid and unpayable debt for just pennies on the dollar. By each giving a little, together we can forgive a lot: raising $10,000 will allow us to forgive $1,000,000 worth of debt that burdens our neighbors—just because they needed care—like we all do.
Nobody should have to choose between paying a bill from the ER and buying food for their families. Nobody should have their credit destroyed because they got sick or injured.
RIP Medical Debt was founded by two former managers of debt collection agencies. Between them, they had collected trillions of dollars of debt from struggling people: but in 2014, they decided to use their expertise in the secondary market for debt collection to help those people rather than hound them. They buy medical debt that hospitals and insurance companies have bundled and sold to debt collectors for pennies on the dollar. They then leverage campaigns like Zion’s to forgive the unpayable debt held by people who are hurting the most:
- who earn less than 2X the federal poverty level (which varies by state, family size)
- whose debts are 5 percent or more of their annual income, or
- who are facing insolvency: whose debts are greater than their assets
